About
The new year begins with a restaging of choreograper Tero Saarinen's creation 'Transit' about finding a way forward from what has been and the hope of finding a new beginning, a striking fusion of music, dance and visual design.
'Transit' is Finnish dream collaboration. A group of Finland's most acclaimed and exciting artists have in this performance embraced the vastness of one of our time's most crucial challenges. This performance is an original comission for our company of dancers and had its world premiere at Malmö Opera autumn 2020. This season brings back this performance to our own stage for a visually striking and intense start of the season.
'Transit' is a furious ritual, a strugle for survival and change, danced under the all-seeing eye. Tero Saarinen and his creative team have together created a powerful dance experience abut the alarming loss of biological diversity.
Echoing aspects of both natural elements and contemporary expression Costume Designer Teemu Muurimäki and Set Designers IC-98 have created a visual world of both sci-fi aesthetics and organic beauty. The artist duo IC-98, Visa Suonpää and Patrik Söderlund, take us on a visual journey into a universe of omminous infinity and sublime hope. With backgrounds in visual arts and cultural studies, their 23-year collaboration has produced artist publications, site specific projects and interventions, public commissions and moving image installations. IC-98 represented Finland at the Venice Biennale in 2015.
The performance's musical landscape consists of composer Sebastian Fagerlund's trilogy 'Stonework', 'Drifts' and 'Water Atlas'. With his interest in large-scale forms and a profound view of music expressing fundamental questions and existential experiences these three compositions contributes with powerful expression, intensity and vivid communication, as well as an openness towards different musical traditions.
Press quotes
”This is, if anything, a Gesamtkunstwerk, where the parts have been skilfully joined together into a both disturbing and hopeful whole.” // Sydsvenskan.
”Transit depicts a universe of life and movement, but in a state of change. The forces of nature are embodied through the various artistic expressions, where dance, music and visual art are carefully combined into a universal artwork.” // Kristianstadsbladet
”With inherent distinction, Sebastian Fagerlund's dramatic music (which is brought to life by the Malmö Opera Orchestra), Toumas Norvio's continuous, electronic soundscape, Minna Tikkainen's skilful lighting design and not in the least the artist duo IC-98's video projections are combined into an elaborate whole.” // Skånska Dagbladet
