Jone San Martin

Jone San Martin Astigarraga, born in Donostia in the Basque Country and based in Berlin since 2015, is a dancer, performer, choreographer, and teacher of the Improvisation Technologies developed with William Forsythe, as well as a Forsythe repertoire teacher. She joined Ballet Frankfurt under Forsythe in 1992, remaining until 2004, and then The Forsythe Company from 2005 to 2015. Since 2015, she has been a member of Berlin’s Dance On Ensemble. 

Jone has created several works, including the internationally touring solo/conference Legítimo/Rezo on Forsythe’s choreographic notation, and has collaborated with a wide range of artists including Forsythe, Nacho Duato, Jacopo Godani, Saburo Teshigawara, Fabrice Mazliah, Jan Fabre, Tim Etchells, Rabih Mroué, Deborah Hay, and Mathilde Monnier. Her current choreographic research focuses on communication, working with non-hearing persons and sign language translators to explore the expressive potential of physical languages.
