Malmö Dance Week: Raised on Rhythm
The rhythms of life intertwine in a playful dance ritual in the dance performance "Raised on Rhythm" by choreographer Niki ”Awandee” Tsappos, a guest performance during Malmö Dance Week.
A world of rythm
There is rhythm all around us – in the slap of jump ropes against the asphalt and in the footsteps from the stairwell. And they do something to us, if we let them. In "Raised on Rhythm," choreographer and freestyle pioneer Niki "Awandee" Tsappos wants to draw our attention to how rhythms unite, liberate, and get people moving. But where does a rhythm begin and where does it end?
With Sweden's hip-hop dance laureate Damon Frost as the narrator and spiritual guide, a winding journey into the universe of rhythms begins. The beats he creates in the moment are combined with recorded music co-created with Erik Hjärpe, also known as "Voz Vibrante". The four dancers Damon Frost, Amalie Sasha Schanke, Yared Tilahun Cederlund, and Rebecca Wolete invite you to games and rituals, where they let the rhythms propagate through the room and become a shared pulse.
Freestyle pioneer
Niki ”Awandee” Tsappos has danced to her own beat all her life. Today she is an inspiration throughout the global dance community inspiring in her work as a award-winning dancer, choreographer, teacher and judge. 2022 Riksteatern premiered her production "Head Piece". In spring 2023 "Raised on Rhythm" premiered at Dramaten in Stockholm where it ran to sold out theatres.
"Raised on Rhythm" is a part of Malmö Dance Week in collaboration with Riksteatern and Unga Dramaten.

I've been in dancing and music all my life, as long as I can remember. IT has been a way for me to navigate through life, keep myself grounded and connect to my core. The rythm never lies.
